Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most renowned and sought-after trekking routes in Nepal, and for a good reason. With just a week of trekking, this amazing trail will take you from the subtropical forests of the lowlands and fields to the high-altitude paradise of the Himalayas. With its route winding through rural villages, glacial gorges, and rhododendron-clad woods, it offers an experience one will never forget to the base of the tenth-tallest mountain in the world, Annapurna I (8,091 meters).

The 8-day ABC trek is a true experience of being in the innerland of the Annapurna. The trek typically starts with a short drive from Pokhara to Nayapul or Jhinu and then into the Modi Khola valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through culturally rich Gurung and Magar villages like Chhomrong, Sinuwa, and Deurali. These settlements provide a glimpse into the traditional Himalayan lifestyle, offering warm hospitality and rustic yet cozy teahouses, the perfect place to rest, refuel, and connect with fellow trekkers.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this trek is its changing scenery. You begin to hike along hot jungle with ferns, bamboo, and orchids, and gradually find yourself entering alpine country with icefalls, glacial brooks, and white rock cliffs. The higher you ascend, the more dramatic the scenery around you is. The final section takes you to the stunning Annapurna Sanctuary, an immense high-altitude basin surrounded on all sides by colossal peaks like Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna.

The trekking climax is to reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130m, a spacious open viewpoint with a spectacular 360-degree Himalayan view. It's an experience of silence, awe, and triumph as you stand under the shade of white-shrouded giants that seem almost close enough to touch. Whether you reach it at sunrise, sunset, or under star-filled skies, the base camp ambiance is pure magic, a humbling experience of nature's magnificence.

Despite its tall elevation, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is relatively strenuous. It is manageable for healthy trekkers possessing a satisfactory fitness level even if they have never been trekking at high altitudes before. The well-defined trail, good local infrastructure, and availability of guides and porters make it an ideal choice for first-time Himalayan trekkers and seasoned hikers alike.

What makes this journey so appealing as well is the ease with which you can get there. The departure point is only a few hours from Pokhara, a lakeside town that is favorite among tourists, so you can experience the excitement of the mountains and also the convenience of the city in a relatively small amount of time. Unlike some of Nepal's more remote trekking routes, ABC allows you to experience fantastic Himalayan scenery without having to use domestic flights or spend time in transit.

Whether it is the treks of snowy peaks, the rich culture of the mountains, or the treks of high altitudes, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers a full Himalayan experience within 8 days. It's not a walk in the hills, it's a journey of connection, discovery, and wonder.

Best Time to Visit Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The best time for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months experience the most stable weather, clear skies, and wonderful visibility of the Himalayan range.  Spring sees the trail covered with blooming rhododendrons, green colors, and pleasant temperatures, a photographer's delight. Whereas summer provides hot, humid conditions, heavy rainfall, and dry landscapes in most locations, autumn provides dry, cool air, less rain possibilities, and lovely landscapes with colorful mountain country under blue skies. Both seasons have comfortable daytime trekking conditions and cold but tolerable nights. Although it is possible to trek in winter (December to February), chillier and snowy conditions make the upper reaches tougher. The monsoon season (June to August) is generally not advised due to slippery trails, leeches, and obstruction in the mountain vistas caused by rain and clouds.

Essential Information

Travel Insurance (Mandatory)

Full travel insurance that includes high-altitude trekking (up to 4,500m), emergency helicopter evacuation, and medical expenses is mandatory for everyone. Kindly provide your insurance information prior to the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatization

While the hike ascends to 4,130 meters, the steady climb and well-structured schedule facilitate natural acclimatization. Our guides know what to look for and how to treat symptoms of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) and will have your best interests at all times.

Drinking Water

There is clean drinking water at teahouses and available for purchase (boiled or bottled). We recommend, though, to carry a refillable water bottle and use water purification tablets or filters to reduce plastic use and stay hydrated.

Toilets and Showers

Most teahouses have shared squat or western toilets, and there are hot showers in lower villages for an extra cost (typically NPR 200–500). At higher elevations, facilities are less complex.

Mobile Network & Connectivity

Mobile phone signal is available in the majority of lower regions (Nepal Telecom and Ncell signals). Signals will be weak or unavailable in upper villages. Wi-Fi exists at a few teahouses for a fee, but it will be slow and unreliable, especially around Annapurna Base Camp

Food on the Trail

Breakfast and lunch are freshly prepared at teahouses and include Nepali cuisine like dal bhat, fried rice, pasta, noodles, soups, pancakes, and even momo (dumplings). Vegetarian and vegan cuisine is readily available. Cuisine is plain, healthy, and carb-rich, perfect for fuel for trekking.

Responsible Trekking

We encourage sustainable trekking practices. Refrain from single-use plastics, respect local communities and wildlife, and follow your guide's advice. We observe Leave No Trace principles and contribute to the local communities in terms of fair remuneration and ethical partnerships.

Tipping Guidelines

Tips are appreciated and anticipated. Pay about USD 10–15 per day to guides and USD 5–10 per day to porters, split between the group. You may tip more for excellent service.
