Taking over 18 days, this trek combines major highlights such as the thrilling Lukla flight, the popular Sherpa settlement of Namche Bazaar, the spiritual atmosphere of Tengboche Monastery, and acclimatization stops at Dingboche and Lobuche. Crossing Cho La Pass (5,420m), you’ll link the classic Everest Base Camp trail with the stunning Gokyo Valley, where pristine glacial lakes reflect the himalyan peaks. The trek also includes climbs to two of the most famous viewpoints of the region: Kalapatthar (5,545m) for the closest sunrise view of Everest, and Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for a 360° panorama of the world’s highest peaks. Best Time to Trek Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes

The best time to trek Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During spring, the weather is stable, the skies are clear, and trails are filled with colorful rhododendrons and compose colorful landscapes. Autumn is also trendy, with the fresh air, fine mountain scenery, and pleasant daytime temperatures, perfect for high-altitude trekking and negotiating the risky Cho La Pass. Both seasons present the best opportunity to enjoy the blue Gokyo Lakes, views of Gokyo Ri and Kalapatthar, and the grandeur of Everest Base Camp. Winter (December -February) is only recommended for experienced trekkers, but also recommended to be prepared for extremely cold weather, deep snow, and potential closure of the Cho La Pass. The monsoon (June-Aug) is the worst time due to heavy rain, slushy trails, and poor visibility, though the valleys are lush and green.

Essential Information

Travel Insurance (Compulsory)

Full travel insurance is mandatory, such as high-altitude trekking (maximum 5,357 m), helicopter evacuation in case of emergency, and medical expenses. Proof of insurance must be provided before the trek. This offers safety while touring remote areas like Chola Pass, Gokyo Ri, and Everest Base Camp.

Altitude and Acclimatization

The trek takes a high of 5,357 m at Gokyo Ri and goes over Chola Pass (5,330 m). The itinerary provides progressive acclimatization, with rest and acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo, to reduce the chances of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). Guides regularly monitor trekkers for AMS symptoms and advise on pacing, hydration, and medication.

Drinking Water

There is safe drinking water available at teahouses or along the route at lodges, which is usually boiled or filtered. Trekkers are advised to carry refillable bottles and purification tablets or filters to ensure proper hydration and reduce plastic usage.

Toilets and Showers

The majority of teahouses have western or squat toilets and hot showers for a small additional charge (NPR 200–500). There may be fewer facilities at higher altitudes like Chukung, Thagnak, and Gokyo. Personal hygiene products and biodegradable wet wipes are best brought along.

Food on the Trail

Food includes Nepali meals such as dal bhat, fried rice, noodles, soups, pancakes, and momos. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available. It is advisable for trekkers to consume high-carb food so that they can be energized. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are usually provided in teahouses.

Electricity & Connectivity

Charging points (solar- or hydro-power) are available in most of the lodges at a nominal fee. Phone network relies: very good in Namche and lower villages but weak or none at high-altitude stops like Chola Pass, Gokyo, and Lobuche. Wi-Fi is occasionally available in lower villages, but generally slow.

Responsible Trekking

We practice ecotrekking: do not use single-use plastics, be respectful to locals, and be green. Apply Leave No Trace principles, appropriate rubbish disposal, and be wildlife-friendly and respectful to sacred sites.

Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is expected and appreciated. For guides, USD 10–15 per day is common; for porters, USD 5–10 per day per person. Special service can warrant more. Tips are usually distributed at the end of the trek.

Packing Essentials

The essentials are trekking boots, layered clothing, down jacket, sleeping bag, trekking poles, gloves, sun protection, water bottles, and personal first aid kits. Sleeping bags and down jackets can usually be rented from the agencies.

Emergency Preparedness

Upon falling sick, in the event of altitude sickness, or upon injury, guides carry small first aid kits and receive high-altitude medical response training. Helicopter evacuation can be arranged when necessary, though costly and requiring insurance.

Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek – 18 Days FAQs

It is a difficult trek at high altitude, with long trekking days, and multiple passes such as Chola Pass at 5,330 m. It is for physically fit trekkers with previous high-altitude trek experience. Fitness is important, and stamina, as well as good acclimatization.

The hike takes to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) and across Chola Pass (5,330 m). Altitude sickness (headache, nausea, lethargy) may happen. Slow acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo, hydration, and slow hiking reduce risks. Guides are trained for response to AMS and advise preventive measures.

Trekkers reside in tea houses or lodges along the trail. Bed rooms are typically twin-sharing with simple facilities. Shared bathroom facilities abound. Hot showers can be had for an extra charge. Accommodation in lower altitude towns such as Namche Bazaar is more luxurious, and high-altitude lodges such as Chukung and Gokyo are basic.

Trekkers will need a Sagarmatha National Park Permit (SNP) and a Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. Agencies typically arrange everything for permits. Bring photocopies of your passport and photographs to use for the application.

Inclusions are sunhat, gloves, trekking boots, down jacket, sleeping bag, personal first aid kit, water bottles, sunscreen, and trekking poles. Clothing should be lightweight and layered to accommodate temperature fluctuations from Lukla to Gokyo Ri and Chola Pass.

Yes, solo trekkers and women are safe on this trek. Tea houses are welcoming, and guides/porters provide professional service. Solo trekkers are mostly combined together, and hence safety and companionship are ensured.

Trekkers with no high-altitude trekking experience can attempt it if physically fit and well prepared. Pre-trek physical conditioning, gradual acclimatization, and rigid sticking to the schedule are critical. Hiring an experienced guide is advisable.

Mobile connectivity is available in low villages such as Namche Bazaar and Phakding but not available or at best patchy in high altitude places such as Lobuche, Chola Pass, and Gokyo. Wi-Fi is available in a few lodges for a small fee but is generally slow.

Food includes Nepali food like dal bhat, noodles, fried rice, soups, pancakes, and momos. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available. Foods with high calories are recommended for constant energy during long trekking days.

Tipping is standard. Official rates are USD 10–15 per day for guides and USD 5–10 per day for porters. Tips are given at the end of the trekking and can be varied based on the quality of service.
