Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is a legendary Himalayan odyssey which weaves sheer landscape, high-altitude walking, and ancient mountain culture together into one epic journey. Covering the incredibly varied Annapurna region, this 15-day trek will see you walk from subtropical valleys up to alpine desert and over one of the globe's highest trekkers' passes, Thorong La (5,416m). It is what makes this version of the iconic Annapurna Circuit so different, though. The stunning side trek to Tilicho Lake (4,919m), the planet's highest glacial lake. Encircled by the massive Annapurna and Nilgiri Himal, Tilicho gives trekkers an otherworldly feeling of remoteness and pure alpine grandeur.

The trek begins with a scenic drive to Chame and gradually ascends through pine forests, waterfalls, and cliffside trails to the beautiful village of Manang, where you’ll acclimatize and explore Gangapurna Lake. From there, the trail diverges from the regular circuit and ventures into the wilder Tilicho Valley, steep, rugged, and breathtakingly remote. After reaching the turquoise waters of Tilicho Lake, you’ll rejoin the main circuit to cross Thorong La Pass, a dramatic high point of both challenge and reward, before descending into the sacred village of Muktinath.

Along the way, experience warm hospitality in mountain teahouses, see the lifestyle of Gurung, Thakali, and Tibetan Buddhist villages, and absorb panoramic views of such giants as Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Dhaulagiri. This trek is suitable for good-physical-fitness trekkers who would like to enjoy both the classic and the pristine beauty of the Annapurna region in one inclusive itinerary.

Best Time to Visit the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

The best times of the year to trek the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (late September to early December). Both these periods offer the best weather predictability, unobstructed view of the mountains, and pleasant day temperatures at lower and higher altitudes.

Spring (March to May): The climb is scattered with rhododendron flowers, alpine blooms, and greenery. Skies are mostly blue, and weather is moderate, even at the highest altitudes. Perfect time to enjoy Tilicho Lake's splash of color against snow-fringed ridges.

Autumn (Late September to early December): Post-monsoon clarity makes it the most favorable season. Expect crisp air, crystal-clear mountain views, and dry paths. Nights may be chilly, especially around Thorong La and Tilicho Base Camp, but day weather is ideal to trek out.

While winter (December to February) is far too cold and snowy (and typically closes Thorong La), and summer/monsoon (June to August) causes landslides and low visibility, shoulder season at the start or end of spring or fall can still offer good trekking windows to experienced explorers.

Essential Information

Acclimatization & Altitude Sickness

There are just a couple of days above 3,500 meters on this trek, the highest being Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Acclimatization is well timed in the itinerary with an extra day in Manang and a gradual increase to higher altitudes. That being said, it's good to drink lots of water, avoid drinking alcohol, and listen to your body. Our guides understand how to recognize AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) signs and will take the necessary action.

Trek Difficulty & Physical Requirements

A moderately challenging to challenging trek for physically fit individuals. While no technical climbing is included in this trek, the long days of trekking, altitude, and varied terrain require stamina and high mental toughness. Pre-trek cardio conditioning (hiking, jogging, cycling) is recommended. First-timers are welcome if physically capable.

Tilicho Lake Side Trip

Tilicho Lake is a side excursion from the classic Annapurna Circuit but is a highlight of this trek. The walk to the lake involves an exposed, narrow trail over rockfall grounds, which may not be possible during winter or heavy snowfall. Your guide will determine weather conditions and track conditions before proceeding.

Weather Conditions

Weather is reasonably predictable in spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Dec). Nights at the higher camps are extremely chilly (as low as -10°C or even colder), especially at Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong Phedi. It can even snow in the high passes during spring, so dress warmly and wear good footwear.

Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek- 15 Days FAQs

The trek is moderate to challenging. The reason that it involves long walking days, high altitude, and a side trek to Tilicho Lake makes it more difficult. With acclimatization, a reasonable pace, and a good level of fitness, it's achievable for most trekkers. No technical climbing is involved.

Even though previous high-altitude trekking experience is beneficial, it is not necessary. Many energetic beginners successfully carry out this trek. Physical training and mental endurance are what are crucial, not prior experience.

Yes, it is generally safe, especially during the recommended seasons. Our itinerary includes acclimatization days and professional guides trained in altitude awareness. However, sections like the trail to Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass can be snow-covered or wind-exposed, so safety decisions are made daily based on weather and group health.

The ideal seasons are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-early December). These seasons offer excellent mountain scenery, reliable weather, and pleasant daytime temperatures. Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass can be isolated in winter due to snow.

You will also need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card, both of which we arrange for you in advance of the trek. These need your passport and some passport photos as part of the application.

Yes, but limited. Teahouses along Manang and Muktinath treks boast hot showers and charging points for a small additional fee. Beyond these elevations, though, comforts decrease at Tilicho Base Camp and High Camp. Having a power bank is highly recommended.

Night temperatures could drop to -10°C (14°F) or even lower for the higher reaches such as Tilicho Base Camp and Thorong High Camp, especially in early spring or late autumn. Day temperatures are moderate, and layering is necessary to stay warm.
